W0331.OCTAGEARLYWIDEM.M  Rare large (7.25") flattened octagonal wide-mouthed English snuff c1730-40. Freeblown (dip-mould). Near flat rippled base with sand pontil. Rounded base edges. Straight sides with whittled arched panels. Rounded shoulders into wide-based short neck tapering slightly through down-tooled stringrim, below everted snapped-off lip. Good aged character and a rare form/size.  Fair/Good  Overall dug condition with matt patina, usual scratches and light ochre iridescent patches. Has  very hard to spot small (12mm) very thin hairlines within shoulder area and an old smallish (4mm x 10mm) chip on lip edge (just above string rim) which has iridescence so more likely caused in manufacture or whilst de-corking and does little to detract.
